Unearthing Environmental Injustice: Air Pollution Inequality
February 1, 2024, 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm
Hear from Dr. Amanda Giang (UBC IRES, Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Sally Pusede (University of Virginia Department of Environmental Sciences) in this seminar on air pollution inequality, part of the Green College Leading Scholars Series.
Join two expert researchers on air pollution inequality as they address the importance of data collection, transparency and interpretation in their respective fields. Amanda Giang will discuss how improved data transparency and community right-to-know about industrial emitters can inform targeted interventions to reduce exposure disparities in Canada; and how community knowledge is a crucial complement to traditional air quality monitoring and modelling through community-based air quality monitoring and citizen science projects in Vancouver. Sally Pusede will then will discuss her work advancing application of satellite remote sensing for observing neighbourhood-scale air pollution inequalities in US cities, and improving our understanding of their emission sources, chemistry and variability. She will discuss avenues and barriers for the future, with satellite measurements having the potential to transform the demands people can place on their policymakers. The session will be structured around short presentations by the two experts followed by a discussion.
